ICANN has published findings of its Phase II Assessment of the Competitive Effects Associated with the new gTLD Program.
The study explores whether the new gTLD Program has affected competition in the domain name marketplace.
The results were compared against Phase I findings.
While the new gTLD Program has had no apparent effect on the registration of legacy gTLD, the introduction of regional new gTLDs (e.g., .nyc and .berlin) is tend to go hand in hand with a decline in new gTLD and legacy registrations in that region.
While the wholesale prices for legacy and new gtld have remained stable from Phase I to Phase II, the average and median retail prices have declined respectively.
